Highlighting the Carroll County Unit

The Carroll County Chapter of IRTA has no historian, so we are lacking many details of our early days in the organization. Carroll County is one of the smallest counties by population in the state. Thus, our opportunities for growth have always been limited. The first members were predominately women, usually from the elementary ranks. Most of the early officers served two years, and the vice president succeeded to the presidency. The meeting places were churches or local restaurants, in each of the communities that housed the seven school districts.

Since those first days, through consolidations-Shannon and Lanark, creating Eastland; Mt. Carroll, Thomson, and Savanna, creating West Carroll; and the joining of Chadwick and Milledgeville- the county now has three school districts. The unavailability of church groups to prepare meals has caused many of our meetings to be held at the local golf course. We currently hold our 6 meetings on the first Monday of the month-from Sept. to Nov. and from April to June. We have been fortunate to recruit many more men in recent years and now have an active group of retirees representing both elementary and high school teachers. We have chairpersons for all committees who report back to the general membership at each meeting. We welcome state officers, letting them see our beautiful corner of Illinois.

Currently, we have 90 members, of which 77 are also state members. We keep recruiting new members throughout the entire year. The growth of our organization involves making IRTA membership a priority for all retiring educators in our county. This means making personal contact with new retirees and attending retirement meetings to promote IRTA membership. We are thankful that our state organization works for all retired educators in both the big and little counties of our state.
